Teaching in China

China hosts dozens of United States (U.S.)-based higher education institutions offering management and business programs and this number is increasing at a rapid pace. However, cultural differences between the U.S. and China make teaching particularly challenging for U.S. instructors in China. We review general cultural differences between the U.S. and China, as well as some unique features of Chinese culture, and link these differences to specific instructional challenges. Based on theory considerations, we also offer 9 testable propositions to guide future empirical research. Finally, we suggest pedagogical approaches and techniques that may prove useful for non-Chinese instructors teaching in China.
